Magdalena Haftner / HAM

(born 1988 in the Weinviertel region of Lower Austria) is an educational scientist, theater maker, theater educator, performer and body-based trauma practitioner. She lived in Latin America for nearly a decade and works internationally with Goethe-Institutes, embassies, schools, universities, and cultural institutions.

From a cerebral-focused academics to body-based creativity
She studied Educational Science (BA/MA, University of Vienna) with a focus on social and inclusive education, as well as Theater Education (IFANT, Vienna) and Physical and Devised Theater (LISPA, London/Berlin). Improvisation—both in theater and dance—was her first great passion.

As co-founder of the Viennese improvisational theater ensemble artig, she developed numerous show formats in German, English, and Spanish between 2009 and 2020, which were performed worldwide. In 2011, she also co-founded the SpielendDeutsch project, dedicated to exploring the potential of improvisational theater for foreign-language communication. Her work focuses on fostering group cohesion and liveliness through shared play—across origins and language skills—drawing on the body and a spirit of cooperation as common ground.

From 2013 to 2023, she participated in international theater projects such as TheaterFlucht Austria, Ritmica Viena, Compañía Wunderbar, and Labor für Kreatives Theater. In Ecuador, she taught voice, movement, storytelling, and puppetry, and co-created theater formats such as ImproStation, TeatroLab, Frau Hum & Herr Boldt, [Between Doors], and Todo basura! / Alles Mist! / All Trash!—often in cooperation with local artists, Goethe-Institutes, and embassies. In Austria, she continues to offer ImproStation workshops for classrooms in cooperation with OEAD. As a Contact Improvisation dancer, she has co-organized festivals and jams and assisted at Tanz die Toleranz and Impulstanz Vienna.

From joyful play to somatic-focused experiences and trauma renegotiation
Since 2022, Magdalena has been working in body-oriented trauma therapy. She is currently training in Somatic Experiencing© and as a multiplier of the La Voz del Útero© practice, with a focus on the female nervous system and trauma renegotiation. She facilitates both group and 1:1 settings, drawing on her improvisational talent, her presence in the here and now, and her compassionate approach to each unique body story.

In her sessions, she creates spaces of (co-)regulation that open the door to each person’s natural creative flow in life. She invites participants to gently befriend their bodies—through presence, calmness, humor, and the power of imagination.

In her private life she sings, plays the ukulele, enjoys contemplative practices, loves nature, animals, and the company of loving people—and learns to sink into moments of pause and stillness.
